Golf Equipment

Over the years we have become pretty picky when it comes to golf equipment.  That comes from seeing the major golf equipment companies produce new designs every year that concentrate on cosmetics.  We don’t like tin-foil decorations that peel off.

If you buy a custom set of irons from one of the Japanese boutique foundries, your golf clubs will be around long after you’re gone.

These are the companies and products that we care about:

Miura and Vega for iron heads.  Fifty plus years of tradition has earned the number one and number two ranking in the world for quality.

On the “Major Manufacturer” (OEM) side, Mizuno is our top choice for irons.  Mizuno sets the worldwide standard for design and finishing.  They also have the manufacturing expertise to produce real game improvement irons for good players.

Two American companies deserve support.  Adams has a prolific design department that dominates the hybrid category.  They have done a great job with drivers, emphasizing aerodynamic designs that compete with the best.  Scratch is a tiny company that invented the concept of fitting wedges and then irons for bounce angle.  They need a little love right now since every other company that sells wedges has copied Scratch’s leadership.

If you’re looking for a very nice set of irons for an inexpensive price, you can’t do better than “Playable Classics”.  Choose Mizuno MP-60′s, Hogan GCD Forged or Bridgestone J-33′s.  You can’t do better.

Shafts have been the focus of the high end golf industry for fifteen years.  Graphite driver shafts, more or less in order of importance:  Mitsubishi, Matrix, ACCRA, Aldila and Fujikura.  Graphite iron shafts:  Aerotech, Matrix, ACCRA, Fujikura and Aldila.  As time goes on, complete reviews of all of the products that we recommend will be included in this section.

The beauty of a blog is that it is constantly changing.  Check back often.

Regards, Leith
